On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, the Shura Council extends its highest appreciation to His Highness the Amir, patron of popular participation in decision making, for the care and attention accorded by His Highness (may Allah protect him) to the Shura Council, which represents the participation of our people in decision-making. On this day, we also congratulate parliamentarians around the world as they represent their people and work together to save this universe from natural and human threats.
Since our celebration today is dedicated to guiding parliaments to work to protect our planet from the effects of climate change, we in the Shura Council would like to explain what the Shura Council is doing to make its carbon footprint, in order to exchange experiences and provide models of best practices. In this regard, the Council is making efforts in line with Qatar's latest pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 24% and use 20% of solar energy by 2030. The efforts of the Shura Council are inseparable from the efforts of the State of Qatar, represented by all its concerned bodies, and what each individual does according to his position.
At the level of its members and employees, the Council works to preserve water and electricity. At the legislative level, the Council discussed during its current session a draft law amending some provisions of Law No. (24) of 2006, issuing Law on administration of Fertilizers a law amending some provisions of Law No. (18) of 2017, on public hygiene, and a draft law regulating fishing ports. The Council also studied the request for general discussion on the violations of some individuals and companies and their impact on the wild environment, and then the Council made appropriate recommendations on the above-mentioned draft laws.
We would further like to point out that the efforts of the Shura Council also include supporting the efforts of various state agencies, through the oversight power exercised by the Council over the executive authority. The various state agencies and authorities are working in coordination to achieve the plans and ambitions of our country in order to combat climate change. Our country is working to diversify its economy away from oil and gas through the transition to renewable energy. Our country has created a special ministry for environment and climate change to reduce emissions that cause climate change. In 2022, the State of Qatar participated in the establishment of the Net Zero Emissions Producing Countries Forum.
Qatar's contribution through organizing FIFA Qatar 2022 as the first carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup is a testament to our country's commitment to tackling climate change, and our country is committed to working towards promoting hydrogen adoption and de-carbonization to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
In response to popular desires, the Shura Council affirms its keenness to work, in coordination with the esteemed government, to achieve the goals aimed at increasing the use of renewable and clean energy as alternative and environmentally friendly sources, through the exercise of its legislative and oversight powers.
