The Shura Council participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held as part of the work of the 148th General Assembly of the Union, hosted by Geneva.
The Council was represented at the meeting by His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Hassan Al-Dhabet Al-Dosari, Council Member.
During the meeting, the committee discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The meeting also held a workshop on artificial intelligence, as well as discussing sustainable measures aimed at improving the living conditions of people with disabilities, including their opportunities for education and work.
In his interventions during the meeting, His Excellency Dr. Sultan Al-Dosari stressed that the development of technology may enhance democracy by enabling popular participation and increasing transparency, noting that the development and global race witnessed in the field of artificial intelligence in particular raises increasing concerns and fears for national security, democracy and human rights.
His Excellency stressed the need to study the impact of artificial intelligence on these vital issues at the local, regional and international levels, and to establish national foundations, frameworks and legislation to regulate the use of artificial intelligence technologies and systems in a way that serves the individual and society.
His Excellency referred to Qatar's national strategy in the field of artificial intelligence, pointing out that it revolves around six pillars: education, access to data, employment, business, research and ethics, indicating in the same context that the State of Qatar has allocated a committee for artificial intelligence in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, which is concerned with developing mechanisms for implementing that strategy. .
On the other hand, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, a member of the Council, participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee for United Nations Affairs, where the attendees discussed efforts to ensure young people's participation in the work of the United Nations, the sustainability of United Nations humanitarian work and the review of a parliamentary proposal to reform the Security Council.
