IPU 140 Committee on Democracy discusses the challenges of counteracting fake news and the protection of liberties.

The IPU 140 Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights has discussed the legislations made by the IPU members regarding three decision approved by the IPU within the past years on the counteracting of fraud and fake news as a global phenomenon with major implications on national strategies.

The session of the Committee hosted experts on social media platforms and the new means of media at its second part. They talked about how these work and the possible precautions and measure to be taken to limit the involved negative impacts of fake news, which has become a major annoyance for people and states.

The experts also stressed that fake news circulating in the internet and some means of social media has become one of the main challenges facing the exercise of liberties and democracy.
