The Shura Council, chaired by HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, concluded its participation in the parliamentary meeting organized by the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates in partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union today, on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change being hosted by the UAE in Expo Dubai until Dec. 12.
The meeting, held over one day, was attended by presidents and representatives of over 140 national parliamentary associations along with several parliamentary organizations, unions, and regional UN bodies. Its various sessions provided a comprehensive overview of the global climate scene and evaluated efforts to combat the impacts of climate change, aiming to equip parliamentarians to oversee climate commitments.
Participants exchanged insights derived from the global assessment process during the meeting. Parliamentary representatives highlighted national efforts in their countries to enhance climate action and shared best practices in this field.
Within the meeting's agenda, a session on advancing climate action and adaptation for the benefit of local communities emphasized the urgent need to increase funding to enable communities to adapt to the global response to climate change.
Another session highlighted the International Parliamentary Union's climate campaign "Parliaments for the Planet," designed to rally national parliaments to take climate actions. The meeting also showcased the activities and initiatives led by female parliamentarians and young parliamentarians through the International Parliamentary Union.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the crucial role of parliamentary oversight in driving effective implementation of the Paris Agreement and post-COP28 commitments. This involves strategies to enhance parliamentary participation, legislative frameworks, and emphasizing the pivotal role of parliaments in ensuring all citizens' voices are heard in climate change discussions and international negotiations.
Through these discussions and dialogues among national parliamentary committees, the parliamentary meeting aimed to establish a comprehensive platform for parliamentary dialogue, support urgent climate efforts at both national and international levels, and translate COP commitments into actionable realities.
The conference concluded its proceedings with a final document emphasizing the importance of parliamentary participation in addressing climate change and exploring innovative legislative and policy approaches for this purpose.
