The Shura Council will participate in the meetings of the 145th Assembly and the 210th session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from Oct. 11-15.
HE Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti chairs the Shura Council delegation to the IPU Assembly.
The General Debate of the 145th IPU Assembly will focus on the overall theme of "Gender equality and gender-sensitive parliaments as drivers of change for a more resilient and peaceful world." Also, the Assembly will address the topic of "Parliamentary momentum to advance the local and regional development of countries with high levels of international migration and stopping all forms of human trafficking and human rights abuses, including those sponsored by the state." All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, will convene during this Assembly. Also, the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments will hold meetings.
On the sidelines of the 145th IPU Assembly, the coordination meetings of the Gulf, Arab, Islamic, and Asian parliamentary groups will take place on Oct. 10 and 11.
The parliamentarians will consult, exchange views, and seek to stimulate parliamentary action on several urgent issues, such as gender equality, climate change, and environmental protection, combating terrorism, dealing with attacks and cybercrime as new threats to global security, promoting democracy and human rights, and ways to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing youth participation in parliaments.
