12 September 2024

The Shura Council participated in the 10th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which began today in the capital of Armenia Yerevan.

Representing the Shura Council at the event was HE Mohammed bin Omar Al Mannai, a member of the council.

The conference discusses the role of parliamentarians in promoting education and employment for youth, especially in light of global crises such as wars, pandemics, and climate change. In his speech during the second session of the conference, Al Mannai emphasized Qatar's strong commitment to education as a fundamental pillar for building sustainable societies. He highlighted Qatar's efforts to enhance its educational infrastructure and improve curricula and programs that empower youth with the skills necessary to meet future demands. This commitment, he noted, is evident in Qatar's significant investments in the education sector at all levels.

He further explained that Qatar's educational efforts extend beyond its borders, providing support to countries facing challenges due to crises and conflicts. He showcased the work of the Education Above All foundation, which offers hope by aiming to provide education to children in the most marginalized and affected areas. The foundation seeks to unlock the full potential of children and youth, enabling them to become leaders in their communities and contribute to sustainable development.

Al Mannai pointed out that Qatar has participated in numerous educational initiatives to support refugees and provide education in refugee camps, as well as contribute to reconstruction efforts in areas devastated by conflicts. These initiatives reflect Qatar's vision of supporting education as a means of building a better future.

He also touched on the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, which was established based on a draft resolution presented by Qatar to the United Nations. This initiative was spearheaded by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of the Education Above All foundation and member of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Advocates. The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution, and the day is celebrated annually on Sep. 9. Al Mannai stressed that this day highlights the urgent need to protect education during times of conflict.

In conclusion, Al Mannai reaffirmed Qatar's unwavering commitment to continuing its support for global education and ensuring that every child has access to education, regardless of the circumstances. He emphasized that education is a powerful tool for achieving sustainable development and rebuilding societies post-crisis.

The conference includes several sessions focusing on key themes such as advancing education and employment by 2030. It will address the gaps hindering the achievement of quality education and job opportunities for youth worldwide. Other sessions will explore the impact of global crises, such as wars and pandemics, on the rights of young people, with case studies from parliamentarians examining how these crises affect education and employment.

A special session will be dedicated to discussing the protection of education for vulnerable groups, such as refugees, with international case studies and recommendations for enhancing international cooperation. Additional sessions will focus on empowering youth during crises, with working groups developing practical solutions.

Parliamentarians will also engage in informal dialogue on education and employment amidst global crises, offering proposals to support education in conflict zones and strengthen international funding in emergency situations.
